Melbourne Garden Waste Disposal & Recycling

Green Waste Disposal & Recycling

The Green Centre started in 1994 as a recycling and green waste disposal facility in Melbourne. Our garden and waste composting system was pioneered at a time where the majority of green waste was ending up in landfill. Designed to compost green waste down to mulch and compost that can be used back in gardens, we aim to effectively close the recycling loop back to the community.

What type of green waste do we accept?

Green waste can be anything from the garden including trees, lawn clippings, flowers, leaves, small pruning's, twigs and more. The Green Centre accepts garden waste from both domestic gardeners as well as professional mowing people and landscape gardeners from anywhere across Melbourne. Please note we are not able to accept palm trees of any kind, this includes both fronds and trunks.

How is green waste managed and recycled?

Once enough green waste has been collected, a shredding process is undertaken, mixing and grinding all the materials together and placing them in windrows for the composting process to begin. Once in windrows, nature starts to take its course as heat thriving bacteria and other microorganisms break down the organic material.

How do you turn green waste into compost?

During the aerobic composting process, it is not uncommon for temperatures to reach 60-70 degrees, ensuring any weed seeds and pathogens are killed. After three months the composted rows are ready to be screened producing the top quality range of mulches and compost available, as well as blending agents for our premium soils.

What are the benefits of green waste recycling?

Green waste recycling has a number of benefits, but one of the most important is the creation of high quality compost. Due to the natural process of decomposition using oxygen, recycled compost is not only better for the environment but better for gardens in general. Composting helps turn green waste into high quality and natural soil conditioners such as mulch, compost and blended soils. It also helps reduce waste in landfills preventing the release of greenhouse gases, whilst conserving valuable landfill space. Dropping off green waste in a timely manner to our facility also reduces the risk of pests and odours throughout your garden.
